Convert symbols to brushes. Use symbols for animations. Modify symbols, re-color the symbols, overlay symbols, apply effects to the symbols and much more.
The checkerboard symbols can be used as normal paths simply by expanding the paths. Once expanded, the designs can be re-colored and normal effects applied to the designs. The symbols can then be transformed, apply perspective to the checkerboard symbol or combine symbols or apply normal effects such as blurs. If you wish to apply a blur without changing the check symbol to a normal path, just use the effects menu and modify the effect via the appearances palette
