Opening Easter egg shapes in Adobe ® Photoshop and Elements

Open the PDF Easter egg shapes via the file open command or use the file place command.

place command

The design is opened as a layer and is set as a smart object in Photoshop CS6 / CS5. The Easter egg designs can also be opened in earlier versions of Photoshop and Photoshop Elements but not as a smart object (an object that can be modified in many ways but still the original pre-effects etc object can be changed and all the effects re-applied)

example - an Easter egg PDF opened in Photoshop - if you are using CS5 you will see this as a layer and one marked with a smart object thumbnail in the layer palette - Pack 2 example

Using the Easter Egg files in Apple Pages ® OS X tutorial

Use the choose option to insert the Easter Egg PDF (or EPS) design. As the Easter Egg designs are vectors, the zoom can be set to the maximum without any issues.

Once you have accessed the PDF, you can set graphic settings such as shadow, stroke (adding a frame etc), opacity via the 'inspector' (as well as metrics settings such as rotation and size). You cannot change the color etc via the 'adjust image' - the Easter Egg PDF is not an image and though it displays the adjust image dialog the sliders are not accessible with Pages (as of Pages 09).

The PDF is a useful way of adding vector designs to pages document as I have found that some font designs fail to export to Easter egg PDF (via the export command), the PDF is a useful way around this issue (this export issue may be only for my pages application and you may have more joy with the export / printing of documents via PDF)

1) Open page document or file menu and new (or new from template chooser)

2) Insert menu and choose command

3) Select Easter egg PDF file via the displayed insert 'finder'

4) Click insert

5) Set size via the size / edit mask dialog for the Easter Egg

6) Position design as required

Re-color part of the egg

The design can be totally modified or just modify a part of the design. A quick and easy way to add some color to the easter egg design is to use the fill command and the magic wand selection tool in Photoshop. You can also fill the design with a gradient or pattern. The original is on the left and the re-colored egg is on the right.

Easter Egg Brushes from shapes for Photoshop, Elements etc

You can use the Easter egg shapes as a source for new brushes designs in Photoshop, you can use the PDF (or EPS) layers as a source for patterns and other designs. The designs can then be stored in ABR or PAT (patterns) files for future use.

You can also use the easter egg PNG files as a source of Paint Shop Pro brushes (though you may need to re-size the designs to less than 500 x 500 to load them as brushes).

Use the Easter eggs PNG files in other software as brush strokes as well

example - the pack 2 PDF layer has been rotated and then using the edit menu and define brush command in Photoshop (as well as Photoshop Elements) the PDF is saved as a brush. Updated: January 2nd 2012

Easter Eggs into Illustrator symbols tutorial

You can use the Easter Egg PDF designs as Illustrator symbols, Illustrator brushes, swatches and more. The Easter Egg PDF designs are an infinite resource toolkit of designs.

1) File menu and Open command   (an error may occur on the opening of some of the easter files especially those with gradients, the files are not stored with editing capability. The error occurs with versions such as CS2 but not with Illustrator CS4 or CS5)

2) Select the Easter Egg PDF

3) Move and re-scale etc as required the Easter Egg

Re-coloring the eggs

The eggs are supplied as is but you can quickly re-color them though this depends on the application. In Photoshop, PSP etc re-coloring the designs can be achieved in a variety of ways.

vector egg

The original egg design is above from pack 31. Use the layer menu to rasterize the layer - you can then use the image menu to modify the color of the egg

hue saturation

Above shows the result of a modification made by the image menu hue and saturation adjustment.

An alternative to rasterizing the layer, you can always use the adjustment layers which applies the effect in a non-destructive manner allowing you to modify the egg etc or even replacing the egg without any degradation of the image, as well as allowing for a change of hue / saturation at any point in the creative process.
