Converting spiral shapes to TIFF and other raster formats tutorial

The spiral shape can be re-colored, modified and much more as well as converted to other formats such as PNG or TIFF for use in countless software.

Opening the spiral PDF files in Photoshop (or elements)

On selecting the spiral file via the Photoshop "file menu" and "open command" (select the PDF format files) you will be greeted with the import PDF dialog. The size, resolution etc can then be set. You can set the size to virtually anything, you can set the color mode and bit depth to 8bit or 16bit if required.

Once opened, the spiral shape design can have effects applied, re-colored etc as you would any design

Open spirals via the open as smart object

You can also open the spiral shapes via the open as smart object which allows for the flexibility to change the design at any point in the creative process and all the associated effects and layer effects can be re-applied. This is only for CS5 and CS6.

If you wish to change the spiral shape at any point, just go to the layer palette and double click the small smart object icon on the layer. The application will then open Illustrator (if available) and allow for the modification of the spiral shape (or whatever the PDF shape is) such as changing the shape / color of the shape / apply effects etc. Save the shape in Illustrator (though this does not save the design to an actual file) and you are returned to Photoshop and the shape and the effects are updated. You can repeat this with the spiral at any point

You can also apply layer effects to the smart object etc - such as adding a color overlay (set the blending mode to darken etc or change the opacity unless you want a solid color overlay) to change the color of the spiral PDF design. The spiral is still a vector so can be transformed and rotated without any degradation to the design.

Placing spiral Photoshop PDF files (or EPS)

You can also place the spiral shape design (or import) and use as a smart layer. Select the PDF command via the "file menu" and "place command" in Photoshop.

The import menu is slightly different to the open (but basically much the same) The spiral PDF file will be added to the current document and can be re-sized there. As it is a smart layer, you can re-size etc at any time and also apply smart filters to the design.

Placing spiral PDF files in Photoshop Elements tutorial

1) Open existing document

2) File menu and Place command

3) Select PDF file

4) Click OK for the selection of the PDF

5) Re-size the layer in Photoshop Elements

6) Click OK

Effects etc can now be applied to the layer (as with any layer), or the layer can be duplicated, or re-applied and much more (or use as source for brushes via the define brush)
