A useful way of using the designs in Illustrator, drag the designs to the symbols palette and use as a symbol. The PDF documents are not stored with editing capability but you can still click on elements and re-color and re-size individual components (within limits). Effects etc can be applied and more.
The PDF files can also be opened in other DTP or Illustration software (though not all)
With CS5 you can edit the PDF files, even those with the editing capability removed (which makes no sense but who understand those kinds of things). file menu followed by open
You will see all the artboard / pages available. Edit as you would with a normal AI file. Place PDF shapes into Illustrator CS5 tutorial file menu and place command Placing type / text etc (or other) PDF files is slightly different to the file open, in that a dialog appears and you have to select the page from a preview list of all the artboards (the preview is very very small and in some cases displays a very poor view of the design). Once you have selected your design, click the OK.
Now click 'embed' (found on the options bar)
Click the 'edit contents' button (a small dot button on the left of the Illustrator options bar). Ctrl-X or cut (edit > cut) to add the design into the pasteboard. Remove the bounding box (now empty) and then copy the design back onto the artboard - now free of the bounding box. This does not work if the path / PDF file contains a gradient.
Modify the design, paste etc to other software. This works with the type / text / letter PDF files as with the other PDF files on the graphicxtras site
