Hexagon custom shapes loading into Photoshop
The hexagon shapes are quick and easy to load into Photoshop CS6 CS5 CS4 CS3, just add the hexagon shapes files via the replace shapes command. Once loaded, you will see all the designs in the Photoshop shapes palette. There is a limit to the number of shapes that can be loaded - so don't try and load 20,000 or so shapes as you will probably find you hit an upper limit.
Hexagon shape color in Photoshop The color of the hexagon shape is set via the foreground color for the shape fill option
The above design shows the foreground color set to darker blue (against a sky blue background)
Set the foreground hexagon shape color to yellow, red etc as in the next image
If you want to add more color to the shapes, you will have to apply them as either a selection and then fill the hexagon Photoshop shapes with effects and gradients or brush strokes; or use the shape as a shape layer and fill with gradients and patterns
Hexagon shapes / Photoshop clipping mask You can use the hexagon shapes as a clipping mask. Open an image, duplicate the layer, fill the background with a color, and then go to the shape tool and select the shape layer option (top bar) and then apply the shape layer between the background layer and the original image layer. Go to the image layer (in the layer palette) and select the menu and the 'create clipping mask option'
The layer palette should look like above. The hexagon shape is a vector and can be manipulated with the point tools and transformations to modify the mask
With Photoshop CS6 / CS5, you can also turn the shape clipping mask into a smart object (just select the shape layer) and then apply the layer menu and smart objects sub menu followed by convert command and then apply a gaussian blur etc as below
As the shape layer and mask is a vector and a smart object, you can change the hexagon vector layer in countless ways by applying transformations, using point tools etc to create new shape masks. You can also modify the smart filter effects at any point in the creative process. Some filters are more effective than other. Selections can also be applied to the smart object hexagons (using Photoshop brushes in quick mask mode). Many different combinations of approach can result in some truly unique raster / vector masking effects.
Hexagon shape options in Photoshop
You can apply the shapes unconstrained but you can also apply the hexagon shapes with defined proportions, defined size, fixed size as well as from the center. Set this via the custom shapes options dropdown
Option 1 - unconstrained hexagon custom shape Default setting, just apply the hexagon shape as required so the shape can be set to 200 x 10 or 10 x 200 which might result in the shape being squeezed. Hold the shift key down to constrain
Option 2 - defined proportions hexagon custom shape
as you can see above, the hexagon is created with the same proportions as created (so if the size is 100 x 100 then you can create a hexagon shape 200 x 200 but not 200 x 250). If you want to create a 200 x 250 size custom shape then you have to set to the unconstrained
Option 3 - defined size custom shape in Photoshop Created as originally defined by the shape's designer. So if the hexagon was created as 1000 x 1000 then the hexagon will be applied at 1000 x 1000
Option 4 - fixed size / hexagon shape Use the shapes more as a scatter or spray or nozzle. The size of the applied shape can be set to say 40 x 40 and then just click the image and a hexagon shape will be added to the current position

Blurring a hexagon custom shape in Photoshop You can blur the edge of a custom shape and still keep the design as a shape layer - by using smart objects. Layer menu and smart objects to convert the design into a smart object.
Once the hexagon custom shape is a smart object you can then go to the select menu and use the load selection command to load the shape transparency channel.
Once loaded, you can then go to the select menu and use the modify command and border command
Then blur the selected area - the inner part of the shape remains unblurred. This not particularly observable if you are using a solid color shape but if you use a pattern or gradient (via a layer style) you can clearly see the blurring is affecting the edges of the shape and not the inner part of the hexagon design
As the hexagon (or any other shape) is still a smart object - you can still modify the design, change the shape to a totally different shape. Sadly the blurring and the edge selection is not a live effect / smart object and will apply the blurring etc to the new area but still using the earlier hexagon selection.
