3D Cube designs and coloring shapes for Photoshop and Elements tutorial

3D cube texture shapes

The 3D cube example above shows the same cube just applied multiple times and in different ways.

The cube has been applied as a fill pixel shape. The cube custom shapes are vectors and can be applied at any size - either gigantic or very small without any distortion.

The left side shows a large example but the cube could easily be 3000 x 3000 as 700x 700 in size. At the top right you can see some smaller icon sized examples.

Loading 3D shapes in Photoshop Elements

Use the file open command to load the 3D sphere / cube shapes. Or use the preset manager to load the 3D designs (that can be found in the edit menu)

3D cube frame in Photoshop Elements

Photoshop includes the custom shape tool, Photoshop Elements has that and also the cookie cutter tool. The cookie cutter tool can use the 3D shapes to create a quick cutout in a 3D shape. The 3D cubes are loaded (pack 50) via the file open command and the cookie cutter tool displays the available shapes. Select the cube design and apply to the open document as below. The transformation tools such as perspective, skew, rotation can also be applied to the cookie cutter (up until the point you click the OK). Added December 29th 2011

Coloring 3D cube custom shapes in Photoshop

The cube custom shapes can also be colored so it doesn't need to be just black (though that is the example color shown in the custom shape palette) - change the color via the foreground color.

You can also (as with the bottom right example) just apply the shape to a new layer and then, without adding any additional material to the layer, use the transformation tools to rotate or shear the cube shape.

cube custom shapes 3D gradient

The example above shows (albeit in a slightly patterned PNG file to keep the file size down) a colorful 3D cube. The cube was created in the same way as the previous examples using the same cube. The shape was created on a new layer and the selection mask was used and filled with a gradient (via the gradient tool in the Photoshop toolbox). The magic wand was used to select the the first side of the box and again filled with a new colorful gradient (combination of gradients and difference blending modes) and this was repeated for the top face of the 3D cube.

Cubes do not have to be a single color / flat or otherwise.

Patterns as well as effects could have been used to fill the three faces of the cube 3D shape.

3D shapes

example - shapes set 50 3D shapes - the cube designs are applied in light purple over the top of a dark purple layer - three different custom shape 3D designs are shown in Photoshop

examples of the shapes from the pack 50 showing various cubes in white (set the foreground color via the Photoshop toolbox) against a blue background in Photoshop CS5 (though the same for CS4 CS3 etc)

cube shapes designs

example from pack 50 - the cube shapes are all applied as a shape layer (vectors). Duplicate the layers and rotate and transform to create a cube background design - a CUBE title added later
