Patterns and designs and letter custom shapes tutorial

Open a new document and select the custom shape tool

Apply the letter / text / alphabet shape as a layer or fill and apply effects - avoid the edges of the document. Apply a single shape or multiple shapes as well as multiple copies of the same design. Change the color of the letter shapes via the foreground color palette in the toolbox

The pattern shape then can be used in fills / paint bucket / layer effects / textures for brushes and more

define pattern

You can also just use a selection and use the define pattern command to take part of a document (or shape design) as above

h shapes

The H pattern defined above (using one of the letter custom shapes). The letter pattern is a fill layer and can be re-scaled to small or bigger shapes. Of course you can also re-define the H custom shape (a vector design) and create a pattern 3000 x 3000 etc. The pattern can also be any color as well (not just black as the example above)

In the above patterns I carefully avoided the edge of the shape design - the pattern is seamless. If you wish, you can also create unusual and interesting (clearly not) seamless patterns or abstract patterns. Select part of a letter shape or perhaps multiple parts of multiple shapes and then use the define edit pattern command (edit menu). The pattern below was created using two H letter shapes, selecting only part of the H letter. You can then, if you wish, select part of the pattern below and repeat the process (a photoshop script / action could be created to do this task with any range of characters or shape designs).

abstract pattern

Photoshop patterns can be scaled but they cannot be rotated. A simple solution around this is to rotate the shape and then define the pattern (not ideal but effective)

rotate pattern

The pattern to the right was created using the bottom 'H' - by default the H pattern was upright but by using the H letter as a shape the shape was rotated and then flattened and defined as a new pattern. This gets over the lacking 'rotation' feature in the Photoshop patterns - shear and warp can also be added into the mix in the same way.
