Artworks and channels - Photoshop custom shapes applied to different channels tutorial
Apply a custom shape as a 'fill pixels' option to one channel, apply a Photoshop shape to another color channel, combining shapes across channels creating stunning RGB images.
1) Select the custom shape tool
2) Select channel palette
3) Select fill pixels (for shape) - top bar of Photoshop
4) Select one of the channels only (say RED)
5) Apply shape to RED channel
6) Select green channel
7) Apply shape, perhaps offset from red design (or smaller or apply effect as well)
8) Click RGB on channel palette to return to standard RGB view
You can also use the split command found on the channel palette, work with the custom shapes and then return to the standard RGB image by using the merge command

Example above shows the use of the split channel and the application of custom shapes - many unique designs can be created using the split channel and RGB channel feature. Modify each channel in turn and then combine them back into a single RGB image.
Modifying part of a tribal shape in Photoshop CS5 CS4 etc
Individual parts of the custom shapes can be changed, you can add a new color to the circles (as below) or apply gradients or effects etc to only parts of the design.

Apply the shape as a fill and use the magic wand tool to select part of the shape and apply a fill (or apply a gradient or effect)

You can also just select parts of the shape using the standard rectangular marquee tool (or the elliptical - or a combination of both). Use this to re-color or apply different effects to different parts of the design as below. Added: December 30th 2011

Create random background using custom shapes in Photoshop
The shapes can be applied once but they can be applied multiple times with varying colors as well as different scales and rotations and even skewed designs. The example below shows a single application of a tribal shape from the custom shapes pack 157

The color of the custom shape is set via the foreground color in the Photoshop toolbox - personally I prefer to just click a swatch in the swatches palette as it is quicker to apply the design.

The shapes can be applied to a new layer, the new layer can then be combined and rotated etc using different blending modes
