Photoshop / PSP : Letter / Type / Text PatternsLetter / Type / Text / Alphabet / Antique Patterns to buy and use in Photoshop, PaintShop Pro and others. PC MAC OS X
Adding text / type / letter patterns to Photoshop and Elements Add the text patterns via the file open command or via the patterns palette right side menu
Changing the color of the letter patterns in Photoshop tutorial All the letter / text pattern sets come with the designs in PAT format (that is the standard format for Photoshop and Photoshop Elements, and sadly, little else). The sets also include the same designs in PNG and the PNG files are useful as they can be modified (easily) - Photoshop is very limited in its ability to modify the color of a pattern as a pattern layer.
Open the PNG file as you would any other file in Photoshop (or Paint Shop Pro or other software for that matter) and then go to the image menu and adjustments (color balance, black and white, hue etc) to modify the pattern.
Once changed, use the edit > define pattern command to save the pattern to the palette for use with the layer and fill commands
Applying text patterns on layers in Photoshop and Elements You can apply the text / type patterns on layers in a number of ways in Photoshop (as well as Elements)
The most obvious way to apply the pattern across a layer is via the layer new fill layer pattern command which adds a pattern layer to Photoshop - the text / type pattern can be scaled, warped, turned into a normal layer etc.
Another option is to add the pattern to an existing layer via the layer style menu command and 'pattern overlay' (at the same time you can always add the pattern to the stroke via the stroke section or to the texture section / bevel)
Text patterns as a selection You can also apply the pattern to selections and then copy the selection and paste as a new layer. The new layer can have a drop shadow, stroke etc applied.
Photoshop pattern seamless tiles Pattern tiles can be saved and then the file can be re-loaded via the place command found in the file menu
Pattern tiles can be saved as a brush stroke and then the pattern can be applied as a brush. Likeiwse, in many cases, you might be able to save the design as a path (albeit limited to basic pattern designs) and use the design as a custom shape
There are zillions of ways to apply and use the patterns - they can even be used as patterns Added: December 20th 2011
Pattern stamp brush in Photoshop Another way to add the text / type pattern to an existing layer is to apply the pattern via the pattern stamp brush tool - a useful way to add a slight impressionist touch to the pattern design
One problem with the pattern stamp brush is that offers no option to re-size the pattern (you can change the size of the brush but not the pattern). A quick solution around this is to create a document the size of the pattern tile and then fill with the pattern and then re-size that and then save the pattern via the edit define command - not wonderful but a quick way to get around the re-size issue of the pattern stamp.
Another way around re-sizing the pattern stamp brush strokes 'pattern'. Apply the pattern brush stroke to a larger document (larger than the actual document you want to paint) and then apply the pattern brushes. Once finished, drag that design to your actual document and use the pattern brush stamp designs as a layer.
Text patterns as a displacement Text Patterns can be applied indirectly via saving the pattern design / tile to a PSD file and then re-applying the pattern as a displacement map
Text patterns for Adobe Creative Suite 6 5.5, 5, 4, 3 etc The patterns work in all the creative suites of Photoshop (that includes Cs6 CS5, CS4, CS3, CS2 etc) all the way back to the Photoshop 6 - that was the earliest version of Photoshop to include the standard patterns format.
The PNG and EPS files can be used in the earlier versions (though it is probably unlikely unless you have windows 98 etc that you can even install the earlier versions of Photoshop ?? I know I have problems with installing version 7 and 6 in windows 7)
