Tutorial ] Multiple channels displacement

displacement maps tutorial example - multiple channels

This displacement was created using the displacements pack 4 'Embellish' but will work with any displacement files

1) Original text before any displacement. Size of document 600 x 600 (Photoshop CS2)

2) Go to to the filter menu and distort > displace filter

3) The displace filter dialog appears, enter 30 and 30 and stretch and repeat. Select a displacement map. The displacement dialog is not very interactive as it offers no preview screen nor can you change your selection without undoing the entire displacement. It is best to know which displacement map to use beforehand, so display all the displacements using the bridge tool or use the supplied displacement gallery

4) Basic displaced text without any change of color

5) Go to the channel palette and select the RED channel and then re-apply the displace filter twice using the same settings

6) Select the GREEN channel and go to the displace filter but set the displacement settings to - 30 / 30 and select a different displacement map file.. Generates a wonderful mishmash of colorful text. Setting the value to -30 instead of 30 will move the pixels in the opposite direction to the original displacements. Only the green channel is modified.

6) Final colorful distorted image, this can now be restored to RGB mode via the image > mode command
