Displacement maps

Displacement maps are PSD files, they are standard format Photoshop PSD files. The PSD files can be opened as any normal Photoshop document, they can also be opened in applications such as Paint Shop Pro or PaintShop Photo Pro or Photo-Paint.

Seamless

The displacement maps are seamless designs for use in small designs as well as huge designs. The displacement maps are 300 DPI and can be tiled. You can also use them as a source for new displacement maps and textures, just avoid ruining the seams (edges) of the designs

Multiple applications

The displacement maps were created with Photoshop in mind and all the displacement / distortions are stored in native Photoshop PSD format but they can be used in other applications such as Paint Shop Pro, Xara, Photoshop Elements and many others. To access the displacements / distortions in these (and other applications) you generally need to open them via the file > open command. You can also often place them in various presets folders such as with Paint Shop Pro, placing them in the patterns folder will enable the designs to be used as patterns in PSP. Each application varies to how they can be used and how useful they are. You can, if you wish, convert the PSD designs (via many applications on the web) to other formats such as JPG and PNG and then they can be used in even more ways.

Use as a pattern in Photoshop®

The displacement maps are for use as displacement maps / distortions in various Photoshop filters but they can also be used as a pattern. The file can be iopened via the file > open command and then use the edit > define pattern command to save the displacement map to the current Photoshop pattern palette. Once the pattern has been added, the PSD file can be used as a pattern fill layer or via the pattern stamp brush or via the layer effects menu pattern overlay or used as a brush texture. The displacement map can then also be re-scaled in Photoshop for a variety of purposes. The displacement maps are all generally seamless though some more so than others

Text

Use the displacement maps to create stunning distortions of text, either apply the distortion / displacement to a single letter or single word or whole pages of text.

Filter gallery command

The filter gallery can be used to combine multiple filter effects and so can be used to combine multiple displacement and distortions. Select the same displacement map and modify the distortion settings for glass or texturize or select different displacement maps and apply.

Repeat applies

The displacement maps can be repeat applied in Photoshop, so instead of just going for a single burst of displacement and distortion or glass, apply the effect, blur, and re-apply the displacement or distortion, this create subtle as well as extreme image effects. Again, wonderful in combination with text or even a very basic colorful image.

Actions / scripts

Combine and re-apply Photoshop displacement maps in 100s of ways via a script or action. Scripts can be used to modify the displacement settings and combine to create abstract designs, weird and wonderful distortions and more.

Displace

The displacement maps can be used in a number of filters. The main native filter is 'displace' filter. The displacement filter comes with settings to scale vertically and horizontally, stretch to fit the displacement map or tile, as well as wrap around pixels or repeat the edge pixels.

Glass distortion

The native glass distortion plugin also uses the displacement maps to create distortions and comes with settings to increase the distortion effect as well apply smoothness and the scaling of the map.

History brush

Use the history brush to re-apply the displacement or distortion in a limited area of the image (or use a selection). Apply using different opacity / blending modes / different brush stroke designs.

Texturizer

The native texturizer plugin uses the displacement maps to apply a texture / relief to an image and offers options for the light direction, relief and scaling of the displacement map.
