Additional notes 1) Multiple applications. The Photoshpp displacement maps were created with Photoshop in mind and they are in Photoshop format but they can be used in many other applications as well as accessed via various plugins themselves
2) Use as a pattern in Photoshop ®. The displacement maps can be used as a displacement / glass distortion but simply open the file via the file open command and then define pattern (edit menu) and you have a pattern for use in pattern overlay / brush strokes and more as well as the fill command and the pattern stamp brush tool
3) Seamless. All the collection displacement maps are seamless PSD files.
4) Abstract art. The displacement maps are great for creating truly abstract art, even from a basic design. Set the displacement settings to extreme settings.
5) Text. Use the displacement maps to create stunning distortions of text, either a single word or whole pages of text can be distorted and displaced in 100s of different ways to create stunning text designs.
6) Filter gallery command. The filter gallery can be used to combine multiple filter effects and so can be used to combine multiple displacement and distortions. Select the same displacement map and modify the distortion settings for glass or texturize or select different displacement maps and apply.
7) Displacements / metallic. The collection displacement maps for Photoshop ® can be used to create superb glass and metallic effects. A simple way to do this is to apply a basic colorful gradient and then blur and then apply the glass filter and displacement map. Minor adjustments to the smoothing or scaling can create stunning glass effects in seconds.
8) Repeat applies. The displacement maps can be repeat applied in Photoshop, so instead of just going for a single burst of displacement and distortion or glass, apply the effect, blur, and re-apply the displacement or distortion, this create subtle as well as extreme image effects. Again, wonderful in combination with text or even a very basic colorful image.
9) Actions / scripts. Combine and re-apply displacement maps in 100s of ways via a script or action. Scripts can be used to modify the displacement settings and combine to create abstract designs, weird and wonderful distortions and more.
10) Displace. The collection displacement maps and glass distortions can be used in a number of filters. The main native filter is 'displace' filter. The displacement filter comes with settings to scale vertically and horizontally, stretch to fit the displacement map or tile, as well as wrap around pixels or repeat the edge pixels.
11) Apply displace to a channel. The displacement maps can be applied to a single channel such as 'green' and only the pixels in the green channel are displaced. Apply different settings to different channels. The displace filter can also be applied and the fade command can be used to fade and apply in different blending modes.
12) Photoshop Displacement maps / displace applied in LAB / CMYK. The displace plugin can be used in different color modes as well.
13) Glass distortion. The native glass distortion plugin also uses the displacement maps to create distortions and comes with settings to increase the distortion effect as well apply smoothness and the scaling of the map.
14) Texturizer. The native texturizer plugin uses the displacement maps to apply a texture / relief to an image and offers options for the light direction, relief and scaling of the displacement map.
15) History brush. Use the history brush to re-apply the displacement or distortion in a limited area of the image (or use a selection). Apply using different opacity / blending modes / different brush stroke designs.
16) Create new displacement maps. Use the displacement maps as a start point. Make a backup of the original but you can always open the displacement map, tweak the image (say apply a blur or smudge to a particular region) and then save as a new displacement map. Avoid destroying the seams.
17 ) Installation for Photoshop ® : Displacement maps are PSD files and can be loaded from any location though the best location is 'displacement maps' folder and that can be found in the plug-ins folder of Photoshop as well as Photoshop Elements
18) Installation for Paint Shop Pro ® and other applications : The displacement maps as PSD files can be used in multiple applications such as Paint Shop Pro ® or 3D applications or Xara or Photo-Paint. For Paint Shop Pro ®, place the files in the bump maps or patterns or textures folder depending on their use. Use as a pattern etc or bump map.
Tutorials Tutorial 1 ]Texturizer
1) Open image 2) Go to texture menu and texturizer 3) Filter gallery will appear with the current filter as 'texturizer' 4) Select the texture (displacement map PSD file). Select file via the browser. Display thumbnails to see the texture to select 5) Set the scaling and relief (in this case texture from the displacement maps SD05_044 and scaling 130 and relief 37) 6) Click the 'add effect layer' to add an additional texturizer effect layer 7) Select the glass filter 8) Select the same displacement file via the 'texture' load texture command. Set the distortion (2 low) and smoothness (3 low) and scaling (100%) 9) Click OK
Creates a very unusual textured and warped (paint like) effect on any image. One trouble with the filter gallery, once you have clicked OK, there is no means (it seems) to go back to edit the settings. Selecting the filter gallery doesn't display the last settings, just a fresh empty set of settings / effects. The filter gallery is useful for combining the texturizer and glass and many other effects, sadly the displace command is not available within the filter gallery
Tutorial 2 ]Channels
The displacement maps / textures can be applied to all channels of an image or just to a single channel.
1) Open image 2) Go to channel palette 3) Select red channel 4) Apply glass filter (via the distort menu), selecting a texture as required 5) Select RGB in channels palette
Tutorials 3 ]Styles and displacements
1) Create a shape layer and select a style (such as metallic) 2) Apply distort > displace (select a texture). Before applying the filter you will be asked if it is ok to 'rasterize' and the shape layer will no longer have a vector mask. Click OK 3) Apply displace with 20 20 setting and a selected displacement map 4) The style will still exist for the new distorted shape layer. Click on the layer effects button in the layers palette to display the layer effects for the distorted layer 5) Modify the shadow. The drop shadow will also be reflected in the new distorted design |
