Swirl Floral Flourish Patterns for Photoshop, PSP etc

Embellish / swirl / floral Photoshop patterns work with: Windows 7 + Vista + XP + MAC OS X (All versions)(Intel/PPC) G4 G5 For Photoshop and Elements (all creative suites) and PSP etc, PAT and PNG format unless stated, 300 DPI, seamless tiles, Commercial use license, royalty-free, all floral patterns by graphicxtras.com (Andrew Buckle)

Swirl / embellish basic pattern (pack 6)

The swirl pattern is applied as a new fill layer in Photoshop. The swirl pattern is applied at 100% scaling but the pattern can be applied at 25% 50% etc (for best results). The patterns are created via the layer > new fill layer > pattern command.

Re-color swirl / floral pattern in Photoshop using adjustment layers

The swirl pattern is re-colored by using adjustment layers (hue) The adjustment layer is non-destructive so the color of the swirl pattern can be changed at any point in the creative process.

The underlying pattern can also be re-sized and moved.

Swirl pattern combined via duplicate layer (pack 39)

The patterns pack 39 swirl patterns include transparency so you can create one layer (via the layer new fill layer pattern command) and then you can create another (either duplicate or create new fill layer) and then shift the patterns and re-scale (25% in this case) to fill all the 'gaps' in the pattern. Use to create many 1000s of combinations of swirl patterns

Swirl patterns transparency and smart object / layer

If the patterns include transparency (such as the pack 39) you can apply multiple fill layers and if you wish to re-color one of the layers you don't have to rasterize the pattern - instead use the smart object (layer > smart object > convert) and you can then use the styles / layer effects to add color or any style to the pattern in a non-destructive manner. Use this to create a near infinite range of stunning colorful patterns even from a basic black and white pattern.

Swirl patterns transparency and smart object / filters

As above with the duplication of layer and transparency, the smart object pattern can also have effects applied to the pattern design (again, non-destructive so the pattern can be moved and changed etc at any point) such as Gaussian blurs or other filter effects. Pack 39

Combining swirl patterns

Many of the pattern sets do not come with transparency so the easiest way to combine the swirl patterns is by using either opacity (at less than 100%) or use a blending mode such as overlay. In this example of the sea weed / swirl / embellish patterns two of the same pattern layers are created and the pattern 2 is shifted - the blending mode is set via the layer palette for the top pattern (set to overlay in this example but it could easily have been difference, multiply, darken etc) Creates a ghostly seaweed pattern

Swirl patterns / smart objects for Photoshop etc

The swirl / embellish patterns can be loaded into Photoshop in numerous ways. If you use the embellish / swirl patterns as a layer (via the new fill layer) then you can use the layer > smart object > convert to a smart object to convert the pattern into a smart object. The smart object can be modified in numerous ways all totally non-destructive.

You cannot move the pattern (as you would a normal pattern layer which is ostensibly infinite) as the the pattern / smart object is only as big as the document or the 'size' of the layer (if there is a selection etc). The smart object / swirl pattern layer can have layer effects and plugin effects applied to the pattern allowing for the recoloring of the pattern, applying of blurs and bevels etc to the pattern.

You can, of course, apply colors and bevels etc to the pattern by rasterizing the pattern but it does mean you lose all ability to modify the swirl pattern at any point in the creative process.

Adjustment layers / swirl patterns in Photoshop

You can create a pattern via the layer > new fill layer pattern but unless you convert the pattern to a smart object layer or rasterize the layer - it is tricky to re-color the design. The adjustment layer commands allow you to modify an underlying pattern in multiple ways such as changing the hue / saturation / black n white etc and the adjustment layer doesn't affect the actual pattern, leaving the swirl pattern as a swirl pattern means the design can be changed and moved and re-scaled.

Creating a new swirl pattern from an existing one tutorial for Photoshop

The swirl patterns are seamless designs. You can always modify that design and then save the pattern to the patterns palette. If you hover above the pattern tile in the Photoshop pattern palette it will display a size for the pattern (700x 700 etc).

If you want to create a new seamless pattern then just create a new file with the same dimensions as the patterns (or double the size etc) Apply the layer and then flatten the design. Apply effects to the swirl pattern / embellish pattern tile but always apply without destroying the edges of the design. The easiest way to avoid destroying the seams of a pattern is to use the selection tools.

Once you have finished modifying the swirl / embellish pattern then go to the edit > define pattern and save the new design to the patterns palette of Photoshop (you cannot do this in Photoshop Elements - you can only use the patterns in Photoshop Elements and not create them)

Determine size of floral pattern in Photoshop

You can determine the size of a pattern tile by going to the patterns palette and hovering above one of the tiles in the palette and a small hint / tip will appear giving the dimensions of the tile.

pattern tile size

You can use this to export pattern files to other formats for use in other software or perhaps save the pattern tile as a displacement map or glass effect or texture for use in the displace and glass filters.
