Loading Dot PAT Photoshop patterns in CS5 CS4 etc
The dot etc patterns are loaded via the file open command - this loads the dot designs into the palette adding to the existing patterns (be careful not to load too many patterns though as the more you add the slower start up might be).You can also load the dot etc designs via the preset manager and the patterns palette - the pattern palette appears in the edit fill / pattern stamp / brush texture / layer pattern / pattern overlay dialogs. New fill layer command and dot & BW pattern scaling Photoshop tutorial
Cross patterns (pack 1)
The patterns in this set are all B&W and contain transparency. In this case the gradient in the layer below is seen. The pattern layer is added in Photoshop via the layer > new fill layer command > pattern. The pattern can be scaled - in this case it is set to 10% of the original source pattern tile size.
Pack 31 (dot / embossed patterns) used below. The BW patterns can be applied as (at 100% scaling - as created).

The fill command (found in the edit menu) offers no option but to apply the pattern as created. In this example the pattern has been added via the layer > new fill layer pattern command the scaling has been set at 5%) in Photoshop
Photoshop Layer styles and pattern overlay / dots
Pack 31 used in this example of the dot patterns
The dot / line patterns can also be used in the layer style dialog in the pattern overlay in Photoshop. The pattern can be selected via the pattern dropdown. The pattern can be scaled and moved to align the design.
The pattern can be applied with a certain opacity and with a certain blending mode such as difference or multiply (or normal as in this case)
Layer style / texture dialog for dots / mixed (pack 31)
In this example of the 'T' pattern from patterns pack 31 the pattern is used as a texture via the bevel section of the layer style dialog. Create a new layer and then fill with a solid color and then go to the layer > layer style dialog and select the bevel / texture dialog and set the texture to one of the patterns in the pack 31. The pattern can be set as well as scale and depth.
You can also convert the patterns for use as displacement maps / glass effects / textures by saving the dot / line pattern tile (seamless) as a PSD file.
Dot patterns and interior effects / group tutorial in Photoshop
The pattern used in this example is from pack 57.
Many of the sets include transparency and if you apply a layer effect, by default, the interior / exterior of the layer will be modified. You might want to only color the actual layer and not fill the entire document with a single color / gradient overlay etc. Go to the layer > layer style > layer dialog appears and then set the blending options 'blend interior effects as group' to ON (by default this is OFF).

This tip seems to be only useful for the gradient overlay and color overlay |
Inverting a dot Photoshop pattern
Dot Pack 57 pattern used. Add the patterns to Photoshop via the file open command. Go to the layer command and new fill layer pattern and select one of the dot patterns from pack 57.

Layer > smart object > convert to smart object (CS5)
Go to the layer palette and select the adjustment layer 'invert' (adjustments are found at the bottom of the palette)

The dot pattern is still active so you can always click on the pattern layer and change the scaling - the invert is still applied. In the example below the pattern has been duplicated and the pattern re-scaled, the adjustment layer invert is still above the two dot Photoshop patterns and it inverts both of the combined patterns.

The invert adjustment layer comes with no settings. Added: December 30th 2011
Adding drop shadows etc to patterns in Photoshop tutorial
Below is a basic pattern created using the patterns from the pack 62 basic set but what if you want to add a drop shadow to the pattern ? You could edit the source pattern (they are all supplied in the sets so just edit the file and apply a drop shadow and then use the define > edit pattern command). You can also apply a pattern as a new fill layer and apply the shadow to that.

1) Layer > New Fill Layer > Pattern
2) Layer > Rasterize > Fill Content
3) Layer > Layer Style > Drop Shadow to give a drop shadow to the pattern
4) Layer > Layer Style > Color overlay to give some color to the pattern

Another, perhaps better solution, is to convert the pattern to a smart object instead of using the rasterize command so step 2 can be layer > smart objects > convert to smart object. As a smart object you can apply filters and styles etc as normal but it does mean the pattern can still be modified such as re-scaling and changing the pattern. This is achieved by double clicking the smart object layer and a dialog will appear telling you that you need to 'save' the changes to the PSB (smart object format) file to commit the changes. As soon as you save the smart object you will see the changes back in the original pattern image.
1) Layer > New Fill Layer > Pattern
2) Layer > Smart objects> Convert to smart object
3) Layer > Layer Style > Drop Shadow to give a drop shadow to the pattern
4) Layer > Layer Style > Color overlay to give some color to the pattern
