Patterns and text tutorial in Photoshop

Use the tiles to apply fills / color to text.

1) Create text using the type mask tool (on the same tool as type)

2) Layer > new fill layer > pattern

3) Select pattern from the pattern tool dropdown palette

4) OK

Patterns can also be applied to text by using the layer > layer style commands and the pattern overlay. If used with the text as a pattern overlay, the pattern can be re-scaled and shifted to create the ideal pattern design.

The pattern designs can also be used in the text in the bevel texture section as well as part of the stroke pattern design.

Patterns can also be applied to text via the pattern stamp tool.

Gradient patterns combined

The patterns can be combined by using different layers and in some cases blending modes such as darken is required to allow the underlying layers to be seen - but some of the sets include transparency and the designs can then be seen without the need for changing the opacity of the layers. Modify the opacity of layers via the Photoshop layer palette

Photoshop layers palette

The gradient patterns can be applied just the background layer but the gradient themed patterns can be applied via the layer > new fill layer > pattern command and then the gradient patterns can be combined via the Photoshop layers palette. The layers palette allows for the changing of the order of the layers as well as the blending modes (difference, darken etc) as well as the opacity - you can also change the name of layers as well as apply adjustment layers and other effects via the layer palette. you can also convert the layer to a smart object (a useful feature as it means you can apply smart filters etc and allowing non-destructive editing of the layer.

Fill command

The gradient themed patterns can be applied as a basic fill. The fill command does much the same as the new fill layer but it does miss out on the scaling (which is a pity - also it misses out on rotation as well as other transformations). You can, of course, manipulate the gradient themed pattern via the image rotation command as well as re-size the entire image.

Fill command applied to a new layer

You don't have to use the fill new layer command (via layer menu) - you can also use the fill command and that can be applied to a new layer (layer > new layer). You can also then go to the layer > layer style and applied a bevel and shadow to the gradient themed pattern.

purple pattern

example the pattern above is from the pack 46 patterns set. It is applied in Photoshop CS5 by using the layer layer fill pattern command. Super colorful designs that can be combined in millions of ways

green padding pattern

example of a green padding gradient pattern from the pack 46 in use as a layer pattern in Photoshop CS5

lighten pattern

example of the red padding gradient pattern applied (and the pattern can be scaled to a different size) and combined with the same pattern and the lighten blending mode in Photoshop CS5 (or any other version of Photoshop and Photoshop Elements)
