How to install the Photoshop patterns in CS5 CS4 CS3 etc
Install the PAT (Photoshop patterns format files) via the file > open command of Photoshop and Photoshop Elements. If using the file > open command the patterns are added to the existing patterns in the Photoshop palette. Add the patterns via the Photoshop pattern's palette load / replace commands as well. The menu is on the right side of the pattern palette.

example shows the pattern palette in Photoshop and the replace patterns command
If the Photoshop PAT files are in the presets folder 'Patterns' of Photoshop or Photoshop Elements, the names of the patterns also appear in the dropdown list for quick immediate loading. Reset the patterns back to the default patterns by using the right side menu' reset'
Will the patterns work in PaintShop Pro X4 ?
Yes, the patterns work in all versions of PaintShop Pro that support bitmap formats such as PNG (so basically all the way back to Paint Shop Pro from Jasc)
Are the patterns seamless tiles ?
Yes. All the Photoshop (and Elements) patterns on graphicxtras are seamless.
Seamless pattern tiles can be used with size of document - if the document is 1000 x 1000 and the tile is 500 x 500 then four tiles will be used and there will be no seams seen in the design
PNG files are included for PSP ? Xara ?
The collection set and earlier packs are only for Photoshop but pack 8 and all the later sets all include the designs in PNG as well as standard PAT. You can then load the PNG designs into the pattern folders of the various software, though how this is done varies from application to application. You can also use any conversion application and convert the PNG designs to JPG or GIF or TIFF. In some of the sets you will also find vector design EPS files and they can also be converted for use as Photoshop patterns
How to install the patterns in Paint Shop Pro ?
If you are using the tiles in Paint Shop Pro just add the PNG files to the patterns folder of PSP (found via the file > preferences > file locations section for swatches) The tiles will then appear in the materials palette for use throughout with shapes etc in Paint Shop Pro
How to use the patterns in the layer effects dialog for Photoshop?
The layer effects / style dialog (found in the layer style command in Photoshop) offers a wide range of effects to apply to selected shape layers and standard layers as well as smart objects such as glows, strokes, gradients etc. The pattern overlay and the bevel / texture section accepts input from the patterns. Only one pattern per layer can be added which does limit the use somewhat. A workaround to the single pattern - use the shape layer selection and then create multiple pattern layers and multiple pattern designs. The pattern overlay does offer the ability to blend with other parts of the style (such as color overlay). Use the patterns in the bevel section - in the textures. You can also use the pattern in the stroke setting (either that or color or gradient)

Transparency and Photoshop patterns
Use the transparency settings combined with layer effects to create grid designs / pattern overlays and more in Photoshop.
Photoshop Pattern stamp tool
Use the designs in the stamp tool for impressionist designs or for brush stroke textures. Use to create stunning color effects and designs
1) Open document
2) Go to the Photoshop toolbox
3) Select clone tool
4) Swap icon to pattern stamp tool (press S is another way)
5) Set brush via top bar
6) Set pattern via top bar
7) Set alignment etc
8) Apply brush

If you wish to create an interesting impressionist effect, check the impressionist check box. Depends on the brush etc to the effectiveness of the impressionistic effect

example - shows the impressionist option along top bar / options in Photoshop |
Re-size Photoshop patterns
Use the swatches in fills or layer content, the patterns can be re-sized if on a layer (as well as angled and distorted). You can create huge designs (with a little blurring - use the rasterize layer to apply a blur or additional effects)

example pattern fill dialog and the patterns displayed in Photoshop
The fill pattern layer dialog showing the pattern fill options such as scale and link with layer as well as the patterns in the current selection. Select the pattern and then apply.
You can use the command once or many times to create 1000s of wonderful layers from any set of patterns.
Use tiles to create frames and borders in Photoshop
Apply pattern fill, remove central core of the pattern and save as a frame. Apply the frame as a layer / overlay or as a selection.
1) Layer > New fill layer > pattern
2) Click OK
3) Rectangular marquee tool (press M)
4) Select middle area of the layer
5) Layer > Rasterize > Layer
6) Delete key (or edit > cut)
7) De-select
Brush textures using Photoshop patterns
Use the patterns via the brushes palette. Select one of the brush tools (say Paint) and then select the window > brushes palette and then go to the texture section of the brush palette. Select a pattern and then set the scale, depth, minimum depth, blending etc. Use the texture effects in combination with the other settings such as scattering and opacity. Set the depth to 100% to see the pattern in its full glory as the lower the setting of the depth, the less of the texture / pattern will be seen. The color of the pattern is lost, you will only see the grayscale value of the brush.
The brush texture / pattern is a great way to apply a pattern to a small part of a document or to quickly use the pattern / texture with effects.
Use the brush stroke / pattern / texture also on a layer so you can paint textures on to say a metallic layer - creating weird and wonderful blobs of metal tarnished with the current pattern - or you can just paint the texture on the layer filled with the same pattern design.

example the brush dialog and the texture section - access the patterns via the dropdown in Photoshop (grayscale only for textures)
Paint bucket and Photoshop patterns
Use the paint bucket fill to fill different swatches on the same layer
Pattern Stamp Tool in Photoshop and Photoshop Elements
Use the tiles in path brush strokes 'pattern stamp' (use pressure and brush settings). The stamp tool is a powerful tool for apply a pattern design in a particular part of a document (you could, of course, use a selection to do similar application of a pattern design to a small part of the image). The Photoshop pattern stamp tool also offers a great feature for impressionist brush strokes
Create new patterns for Photoshop
Apply a fill, then modify, then overlay additional pattern fills, and follow with the offset filter to move elements of the design - use the define command to save the new tile. Use the presets manager to save either that single design or save all the current tiles to a new PAT file (this will be stored in the same format as the current version so the designs will not be accessible in earlier versions of the application)
Use the swatches as art history source
Apply the swatches to an image and then fill the design with white or another image. Then select the command line in the history palette containing the original applied seamless design and then use the art history brush to re-apply using various impressionist styles.
Create sketched patterns using history tool / palette in Photoshop
Use the layer > new fill layer > pattern to create a new pattern layer

example being a pattern layer using a pattern from the 1000+ collection set.
layer > flatten and then fill the document with white using the edit fill command
Go to the history palette and select the state with the layer flatten (you can't apply the pattern layer state as it is a layer and that is no longer available to Photoshop - though why it cannot allow this if you are painting to a new layer is beyond me)
Select the history tool in the Photoshop toolbox and then select a brush stroke (the example being used is from the sketch / gel brushes in the brushes collection from graphicxtras)
You can apply the history brush with different blending modes such as darken, normal, difference etc as well as change the opacity and also with different brushes as well as different shape dynamics, texture etc (via the brush palette). Added: January 2nd 2012
