Any questions, please let us know Modifying spirals shapes using direct selection tool in Photoshop
One of the features that I really like in Photoshop is the easy to use 3D. OK, it is never going to be a super all inclusive 3D tool (though I guess it could be) but it is very easy to use compared with some of the more complex 3D applications such as Blender, Poser, 3D Studio Max, Lightware, Carrara as they all have very steep learning curves. Photoshop does offer a quick and easy way to turn any shape or path such as the spiral shapes into a wonderful model.
1) Select shape and add as a layer
2) go to 3D menu and select new 3D extrusion
and that is it.
There are also a few additional options that can be used to great effects such as the new mesh from layer (postcard) and the new mesh from layer and depth map (single plane, etc) and combining the vector layer with gradients as well as different fills and effects and patterns, all kinds of amazing depth maps can be created from the layer. That is also just the start as you can pre-combine the layer with effects and layer effects and then use the depth maps and then flatten the layers and then use the result as a new depth map and literally millions of amazing 3D models can be created.
You can also export the model to OBJ etc via the export layer command in the 3D menu. If you have a 3D printer, you can also print the new model.
The answer is varied. All the spiral shapes are very different and they all have very different origins. Many of them were created using the basic tool that comes with Illustrator and were then expand and re-worked in different ways. Some of the artworks were created using the plugins developed on this site as well as plugins from Astute Graphics such as the VectorScribe set. The paths were then copied and pasted into Photoshop and saved to the CSH panel via the edit menu define command and then the panel was saved as a CSH file.
You may find the spiral fonts of interest and use and they can be used in countless applications
