How to create them

All have been created in Adobe AI or similar vector applications as using third party plugins such as Astute Graphics' VectorScribe. With pack 231, I also used a powerful vector application called Candy Apple (Mac) as it comes with a powerful zigzag feature - well, it says a zigzag on the tin but it also makes a truly mean looking wave in a whole load of styles. I have yet to explore all the features of the application (as I have only had the application for a week) but it has a number of interesting a quirky ways of doing things (certainly very differently from Illustrator). They were all then copied from the application via the pasteboard in Adobe AI - that alone is a big thumbs up as many applications fail on that front. The paths were pretty decent as well, though using them with the width tool in Adobe AI, did add a lot of points which is perhaps not too much of an issue for rasters but as I will also bring out an Illustrator themed vector set, so I cleaned up many of them using the wonderful smart remove brush plugin from Astute Graphics that comes in the VectorScribe set. If you want to check out the Candy Apple tool, you can find it via the link and also find the application on iTunes. I have been impressed so far (but I am impressed by lots of things). They were then copied from Illustrator after some re-working via the Mirrorme plugin (in many cases) into Photoshop and from there into a PNG. I don't normally use Adobe ® Photoshop ® for this but they all grew very complex and the artboards were all over the place by the end of the project - I would normally use those to create the PNG images. All the artworks end up as raster format files but if you prefer wave custom shapes files are better though the format only works in PS and PSE, so if you are looking for something to use with other applications then the wave fonts and they can be used to any size.

How to use them with actions

They were all created initially in PNG and they were then added to ABR via Adobe ® Photoshop ® action. Note that not all the sets have the ABRes files, but you can create them using the actions in Adobe ® Photoshop ®. The action was a basic one - define brush and a close file (didn't want to leave the PNG images open) and that is run via the Adobe ® Photoshop ® batch menu found in the file menu. They were then added to the current panel and saved as an ABR. The PS actions can be further used to create quick variants such as adding a set of 50 blur dabs or noise / random dabs - simple act of adding filters to action to apply to all the PNG images. Also, you can create variable sized dabs or inverted or layer effect metallic strokes and much more.
