  1. Gradient tool

  2. Goto to the gradient panel / dropdown and select a preset

  3. Set style to linear

  4. Click top of the image in Photoshop

  5. Drag down and hold shift key down for the vertical gradient

  6. Release mouse at bottom of image

Different origins for tool : originYou can, of course, have a different origin point (perhaps 200 pixels from top) and release at any point before the bottom.

 

The preset can be a solid color preset with no transparency. It could be made of many opacity stops. You can start from the bottom up as well. The key thing is the shift key and up or down to apply it vertically

Select the rectangular marquee tool and then create a long and thin selection from top to bottom. Go to the GRD tool. Select a preset and then Select linear style. Apply preset from top to bottom and hold shift key to constrain the preset. Go to the Move tool. Hold down alt / option and duplicate and move selection. Repeat numerous times and fill

Using layer styles : stylesYou can create a rectangle layer and then go to the layer menu and layer styles and add a gradient overlay which can then set the angle to 90 degrees and set the style to linear. Click OK.

Duplicate the layer and then modify the origin position of the style by re-displaying the panel by double clicking the panel via the layers panel.

Selections: selectionYou can create all kinds of selections such as thin long vertical selection. You can then fill the selection. You can repeat the selection multiple times and fill with those perhaps with different start points and lengths. You can also add bevels etc to the selections.
