Basics : basicYou can apply a vector layer (ellipse, rectangle etc) and the entire vector layer is used. You can by using the above approach just use half of it or a faded version of it. You can 'cut' out a whole chunk of the image or perhaps the edges only. The original layer is still there but not just so visible.

The key thing is the layer menu and the reveal all command and then the thumbnail in the layers panel. Click that and use the tools to modify that. Only add and remove from the thumbnail on the right.

Modify using brushes and more : brushesYou don't have to use just black as you can use gradients etc to make much more interesting modifications to the artwork.

You can use numerous other sources to modify the artwork such as using the vector itself (as a pixel fill) or using other presets or brush strokes or patterns etc.

Modify using effects : effectsYou can also add effects etc to modify the result and then changing the appearance of the design.

You need something to work with so if you only have a white background for the mask then there will be no change. Fill it with something such as a gradient and then use effects such as the twirl filter

Functions : deleteYou can also right click the thumbnail and disable it as well as delete.

You can also combine it with selections via those commands.
