  1. Select Photoshop custom shape tool and set to shape layer option

  2. Select shape and color and apply

  3. Display layer panel

  4. Layer mask and 'reveal all'

  5. Goto layer menu and select the layer mask thumbnail

  6. Set shape option to fill / pixel mode and color to black and apply to document

  7. To return to 'normal', just click the layer thumbnail instead of the mask

The mask shape can also be modified at any point. You can also simply restore it back to the default mask by filling the layer mask with white. You don't have to use just black as you can use gradients etc to make much more interesting layer masks in Photoshop
