Basics grid design : tileThe basic design can be that simple - two black and white squares to create a checkerboard pattern in Photoshop. A two x two grid and two cells filled with a dark color and the others filled with a lighter color.

Once you have the design, you can then use it a number of ways within the application such as new layer content and fill. That is probably the easiest way to add it as the art is then a layer and can be scaled.

As the grid is a fixed size, you may wish to create the basic design using a largest document possible (there is a max size for the tiles and this varies from version to version).

More complex grids : complexYou can create more complex checkerboard patterns perhaps 4 x 4, 6 x 6 etc and so on.

Perhaps vary the color of the tile to red and blue or fill the 'white' with a gradient etc.

Or add black to the white and white to the black cells as on the right

You can also do much the same thing in most applications.

Buy Price : $3.49 US or equivalent. 260 Wonderful tiles in PAT and PNG format (V3) gallery

Define the tile : defineTo define this as a tile in PS, go to the edit menu and define command - supply a name and click OK.

You will be able to use this tile in features such as new layer fill content and fill command and also layer styles as well as stamp brush and scripts and more

If you wish to use them in another application then you can save the artwork to a PNG file and then load them via the gradient tool in Affinity Photo or add the art to a PSP folder etc

Variant tiles : tilesYou can create all kinds of variant checkerboard Photoshop patterns by varying the types of black and white in the design.

Perhaps go for a different size of tile and grid and then fill two cells with white and then one cell with black and then two more cells with white and then black and so on.

Next row you can then start with two blacks and then a white and so on. There are many possible ways to add the designs.

Or adding effects such as liquify into the mix

Saving the design : You can use the generated design in 1000s of ways in PS but you can also save any generated layer to the CC library (found via the window menu) and then that can be used in Adobe Indesign and Adobe After Effects and Illustrator etc. You can also save the artwork as a PSD file or PNG file and then use the same artwork in applications such as Affinity Photo and Affinity Designer and PaintShop Pro etc
