Extension for typefaces : extensionYou can now create fonts with the application using the fontself Illustrator extension (there is also a Photoshop version but that is slightly different as it is for color designs) in minutes (though it does require some pre-preparation

Buy Price : $11.99 US or equivalent. 16,000 Strokes, commercial use AI gallery

Trial : You can find out more about the product and getting a demo via the FS website but this is a quick tutorial on the extension and how to create an OTF opentype set in a few minutes

You must have Adobe Illustrator and you must install the FS and that is done via their installer.

New typeface : You will find the Illustrator fontself extension in the window / extensions menu and to use, simply select that. Of course you need some designs to add into the FS panel (this can be done before or after you display the panel) Click the 'new' to create a new typeface (or open etc if you wish to open an existing one)

Use existing : It is easiest to use a pre-existing OTF TTF etc to create the characters. Just use a pre-installed typeface and expand the A B C D etc and 1 2 3 4 etc and drag those into the FS panel. If you are creating commercial typefaces then clearly you can't do that and release it. That is only for test purposes. Clearly another option is to create some quick test characters and they can also simply all be the same character applied 80 or so times over for the FS

Add to glyphs A-Z : addHow to add characters and designs to the glyphs panel in FS

Create some designs for the FS. You must create 26 characters for the uppercase and 26 characters for the lowercase and 10 characters for the numerical fields.

OK, so you have the first batch of 26 characters and they must be 26 characters, not 27 or 30 etc so you must use the pathfinder to combine paths if you have a couple of paths for a single character

Select all 26 characters. Drag to the FS and select the A-Z

Add to a-z glyphs : Select another 26 characters / designs (they can be the same artworks) and drag and then fill that set (when highlighted in the FS)

It will take some time to process but you will see all the glyphs filled for a-z section

Add to 0-9 glyphs : Now select the 10 characters from 0 - 9 and drag and select the numbers option in the Illustrator fontself panel (you are now very close to creating your first font with the tool).

Modify the letter spacing for the entire set as well as line spacing by clicking the + -

Other glyphs: Drag other characters / designs to fill the other glyphs such as commas etc by clicking the batch.

With the batch glyphs, you will have to go and update those manually by simply going to the glyph and entering a ] or _ etc into the little box below the character. You don't have to do this but you might like to have your typeface include commas and full stops and exclamation marks etc.

Information :

You will still need some info added to the typeface such as copyright, trademarks etc. Sadly the extensions never stores the information for the info, which is unusual as the license information etc is probably the same from set to set etc. Anyway, put as much as you want about the family name etc

Export OTF typeface : exportHow to export the designs as an independent OTF file and sell the artworks and designs or share them with others

If you want to create an independent OTF file for use to sell etc or just for backup purposes then click the export command and you will then create an OTF file that can be used by others on the PC and mac.

Install : How to install the typeface using FS ? Use the "install" option if you just want the FS tool to install a typeface for use in the creative cloud and on your machine. If you use the export then use the control panel etc to add the OTF to your OS for use in other tools such as Affinity Photo

Super useful extension : If you want more info about the FS then I would recommend that you contact them. I have found the FS super useful and a great way of creating quick OTF files for my projects as well as export artwork for use in other commercial work.
